Application for Registration as a Singapore Patent Agent under rule 7(1) of the Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001.
FAQ
- What requirements do I need to fulfil to be registered as a Patent Agent?
To be registered as a patent agent, you would need to fulfil the requirements stipulated in the Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001.
Below is the overview of the requirements to be registered as a Patent Agent in Singapore:
a. is resident in Singapore;
b. holds a university degree or equivalent qualification approved by the Registrar;
c. has passed the course specified in Part I of the Third Schedule;
d. has passed the examination specified in Part II of the Third Schedule; and
e. has completed internship in patent agency work under the supervision of a registered patent agent, or an individual registered as a patent agent or its equivalent in a Country/Region or territory, or by a patent office, specified in the Fourth Schedule, for -
(i) a continuous period of at least 12 months; or
(ii) a total period of at least 12 months within a continuous period of 24 months. - What supporting documents do I need to submit?
The following documents are required for registration as a patent agent:
(i) Form A;
(ii) A copy of the NRIC/Passport/Employment Pass issued under the Immigration Act;
(iii) A copy of the University Degree Certificate and its transcript/any other supporting documents for academic qualification (if applicable);
(iv) A copy of the Master of IP and Innovation Management (MIPIM)/Graduate Diploma in IP and Innovation Management (GDIPIM)/Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law (GCIP)/other supporting documents of equivalent qualification (if applicable);
(v) Singapore Patent Agents Qualifying Examination's result slip(s)/other supporting documents of equivalent qualification (if applicable);
(vi) Original letter from supervisor for internship completion/other supporting documents (if applicable);
(vii) Two original sets ofForm B(Certificates of Good Character) completed and signed by two different declarants;
(viii) Supporting documents for practical experiences (if applicable);
(viv) An original set ofForm I (Certificate of Good Performance) (if applicable). - What do I need to do to if I want to seek for exemption at the time of application for registration as a patent agent?
If an applicant would like to seek for exemption(s) from Rule 6 of the Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001, at the time of application for registration as a patent agent, he/she is required to submit:
(i) a written request for exemption(s) stating clearly what you are requesting to be exempted from;
(ii) substantiate, justify and explain why your experiences may be equivalent to the requirements
(iii) Certified copies of the degree, transcript, module write ups (including assessment modes), professional certifications, professional examination records, certificates of good standing issued by the relevant authorities, employment letters and testimonials. We advise that the extent of documentation be as detailed as possible.
Request for exemption can be a tedious process. We will write to you to ask you to furnish more supporting documents if we find the submission incomplete. - What are the lists of approved courses for the patent agent qualification?
The list of approved courses is listed under the third schedule of the Patents (Patent Agents) Rules 2001.
(i) Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law course by the National University of Singapore
(ii) Graduate Diploma in IP and Innovation Management (with a specialisation in patent agency) course by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS, formerly UniSIM)
(iii) Master of IP and Innovation Management (with a specialisation in patent agency) course by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS, formerly UniSIM)
